A total of six fights were held as part of the Soo Line Boxing Club's final card of the season, which was held Saturday evening at Elks Hall. The card ended not only the 2002-2003 season of the Soo Line Boxing Club, but also their residency at Elks Hall, which closes its doors to the public as of today, April 30. Coach Hank Hartenberger said they don't have any other space lined up for the club as yet. They're hoping for something to develop, but for now, they can only close their doors. "We don't know what's going to happen," he said. The highlight of the evening's card was the match between light heavyweights Johnny Hale of New Town, N.D., and Ray Mousseau of the Winnipeg, Man., Alliance Club. It was a titanic match between Hale, a rodeo bullrider, and Mousseau, a former Canadian junior champion with over 50 fights on his record. The pair literally slugged it out from the opening bell to the end of the four-round bout, but Hale, weighing in at 178 lbs, captured the victory by a close decision over Mousseau, who recently returned to boxing after a break of several years. Hale was presented with the best senior boxer trophy by Graham Craig, president of the Saskatchewan Boxing Association. In the single female bout of the evening, Stephanie Poorman of the Regina Friendship Centre, weighing in at 119 lbs., defeated Tremaine Miles of the Ochapowace Reserve club by a second round referee-stops-contest (RSC). Poorman was later presented with the best female boxer trophy. Soo Line Boxing Club member Monte McNaughton, weighing in at 147 lbs., put in a good showing against Clayton Twardzik of Saskatoon, winning his first two rounds. In the final round, however, Twardzik rebounded and managed to overcome McNaughton by a single point. Leroy Solomon of the Regina Friendship Centre, weighing in at 101 lbs., defeated Stephan Letandre of Winnipeg Thunder Warriors Club by a close decision. Solomon was later awarded the best junior trophy. Matt Dumais of Saskatoon, weighing in at 156 lbs., defeated Ryan Jones of the Winnipeg Alliance Club in a hard-fought contest. Brawn won over skill in this case; Jones was a good technical boxer but Dumais hit harder and more often. Finally, Soo Line Boxing Club member and provincial champion Joel Franks scored another victory over Manitoba champion Hazen Chessie in the semi-final bout. Franks, weighing in at 139 lbs., found it hard to score points with his bunches, as Chessie showed strong technical skills. As well, Franks was suffering from the flu, so he was not at his best. |
