Large audience takes in Old Tyme Fiddle Contest

Weyburn's third annual Old Tyme Fiddle Contest saw its biggest audience ever watch the competition from a field of about 20 fiddlers from around the province. Organizers said there were over 190 audience members who took in the contest on Saturday in McKenna Hall, which included a number of young Weyburn performers.

In the novice category, for those 12 and under, Kyle Fawcett of Weyburn won first, and Adam Fawcett of Weyburn came in second. Adam was also the youngest fiddler at the competition at the age of seven years. In the junior category, for those aged 12 to 18, first place was won by Elisa Fawcett of Weyburn; second went to Shavonne Munro of Weyburn; and third was Andrew Horner of Weyburn.

In the senior category, for those aged 65 and over, first was Arnold Finan of Saskatoon; second was George Daniel of Kenosee Lake; third was Gordon Radu of Regina; fourth was Paul Olsen of Canwood; and fifth was Fred Easton of Kenosee Lake.

In the open category, Jim Zimbaluk of Regina was the winner.

In the championship category, open to all ages, James Steele of Saskatoon won first; Adam Waldner of Shellbrook won second; and Lionel McCorriston of Tisdale won third. McCorriston is the grandfather of the Fawcett children of Weyburn.

In the twin fiddling in harmony category, first place went to James Steele and Adam Waldner, and second was Jim Zimbaluk and Gordon Radu. In the novelty category, James Steele won first and Lionel McCorriston came second.
