Motocross event to be held at Moffat Pits on May 25

Just over 300 riders will converge on Weyburn on Sunday, May 25, when the Weyburn Motocross Association hosts a relay at Moffat Pits.

John Rouse, president of the association, said there were 327 riders at an event in Moose Jaw over the weekend, so they're hoping for at least 300 out at the Weyburn track, including about a dozen local riders.

The event starts at 10 a.m. and will run until 5 p.m. Motocross is a spectator-friendly sport, and the public is welcome to attend; admission is just $5 per person, which buys a wristband that allows the person to come and go as they please.

Considering the event will provide about eight hours of entertainment, that's pretty cheap, said Rouse.

"Some of the best racers in Saskatchewan will be racing here at all levels, from four years to 50 years old," he added.

Proceeds from this event not only benefit local motocross, but also their partners, the Weyburn Firefighters' Association, who use it as a fund-raiser, said Rouse. As well, the Weyburn Boy Scouts also set up the canteen at the event.

Spectators will be mostly located on the hill overlooking Moffat Pits, where they will avoid most of the dust and debris kicked up by the riders and their bikes.

Moffat Pits, located out by the Weyburn Golf Club, has undergone a facelift in the past couple years, with new jumps and sections of track being added to the existing course.

Rouse said they are looking towards some more changes next year, as their budget allows.
