Clean-up contest ends on May 27

Capturing the Can may be a down and dirty process, but Weyburn will have to maintain a squeaky clean image to defend its title come Tuesday, May 27.

That's when, for the first time ever, the committee of three judges inspecting Weyburn and Estevan for the Golden Garbage Can trophy will visit both cities on the same day, rather than stretching it over two days.

Weyburn will be inspected in the morning and Estevan in the afternoon to determine which city is the cleanest and, therefore, who gets the Golden Garbage Can.

Weyburn has a lead over Estevan in the number of times won, and recovered the trophy last year after losing it in 2001.

It would be a dirty shame, then, to have the city's honour tarnished by losing the Golden Garbage Can, but Debra Button, chairwoman of the clean-up committee, is confident about clinching the contest.

"I'm sure we will be named the cleanest city in Saskatchewan come May 27," said Button, who met with her area chairmen for the last time on Tuesday.

The judges will make their decision later in the day as to which city is the cleaner.

This week will mark the final few "events" leading up to the Golden Garbage Can judging. On Saturday, May 24, house ball teams from around the city will be picking up litter as part of Minor Ball Green Day.

As part of the event, players raise pledges in order to go out and pick garbage, with proceeds going to the house league.

Players typically hit the streets around 10 a.m., and then go to a wrap-up at the Colosseum.

On Monday, May 26, the Weyburn Chamber of Commerce will conduct their business and property judging.

Last Friday marked the residential and best lane judging conducted by the Sun Country Regional Health Authority. The best area in town was Area No. 1, or South Hill, and the best back lane was in Area No. 5, between Tom Hart Drive and Warren Avenue.

Winners of the poster contest put on by the city of Weyburn are as follows: for Grade 1-2, Michaela Sidloski was first and Konrad Proszak was second; for Grade 3-4, Taylor Verbeurgt was first and Mercedes Alexander was second; for Grade 5-6, Ashley Pickering and Jordan Huebner were first and second respectively.
