The Family Place is looking for entries for this year's third annual River Boat Festival, to be held on Sunday, June 15. "It's really a lot of fun," said Helen Stepp, from the Family Place fund-raising committee. "We get an extraordinarily good crowd and they really like it. It's also a lot of fun to make the boats and participate in the race. There's lots of good, healthy competition going on." Stepp suggests people include their dads in their team to make it a good Father's Day event. Two categories have been set for the afternoon fund-raising event. The first category is a home-made, or modified boat; the second is a canoe or dinghy. Entries are possible up until 1 p.m. on race day but Stepp says it's preferable for teams to register themselves and pick up pledge forms in advance to raise as much as possible. "We're not going to turn anyone away on race day, but we would like the teams registered in advance." Just over $3,000 was raised for Family Place activities last year. A cash prize will be awarded for the winning team in each of the two categories, with an Ultima mountain bike for the individual raising the most funds. Everyone raising more than $100 will receive a T-shirt, with prizes for the best costume, most spirited team, etc. The entry fee for each team, which must be made up of four people, is $100. All participants must wear a life jacket and no motors or regulation oars are allowed. Boats may be used by more than one team. Teams are encouraged to wear costumes. Pre-race activities will begin at 12:30, with the races set to start at 2 p.m. |
