The Weyburn Peewee Youngfellows baseball team blew away the competition in the second annual Spring Classic tournament this weekend, winning the championship. The tournament began on Friday with a 7-2 defeat of the Regina White Sox by the Youngfellows. They faced the Regina Pacers next in a tight battle that featured three long balls leaving the yard by Weyburn players. Colten Jensen had two of the home runs and Jon Neuberger hit one. The battle continued and when the last out was called the score was a 4-4 draw. Next up were the Moneymen from Melville. Weyburn took an early lead and scored often to hand the Melville team a 9-2 drubbing. Weyburn headed into their final game of the tournament on Sunday. A victory over the visiting Swift Current Indians assured the Weyburn team the Myers Norris Penny Championship trophy. Their aggressive base running and batting was too much for the boys from Swift Current to handle. Weyburn showed their defensive ability by holding Swift Current to only one run with very few base runners advancing past second base. A failed stolen base attempt by Swift Current ended the game that saw Weyburn cruise to a 10-1 victory and hoist the championship trophy for the first time in the tournament's short history. The coaches were pleased with what they saw over the weekend and say all players contributing on offense and defence. In regular league play last week, the team took a trip to Estevan for an evening game with the peewee boys from the energy capital. Weyburn got off to a slow start and dug a hole early in the game. They did battle back and even had the lead for a time during the midpoint of the game. However, the home team prevailed and won the game 8-6. This was the first time the Weyburn boys have been defeated in league play this season. Coach Neuberger was a little disappointed in the outcome but noted that a long layoff probably contributed to some uncharacteristic mistakes by his team. Next action for Weyburn is Thursday, May 29 in Regina against the Pacers at 6:15 p.m. and the next home game is Saturday, May 31 at 1 p.m. in Jubilee Park against the White Sox from Regina. |
