Current, former residents play in Bocce ball tourney

A group of current and former Weyburn residents gathered to hold the first annual invitational Bocce tournament at River Park on Sunday.

Players were from Arizona, Michigan, B.C., Alberta and Saskatchewan, with teams representing Chilliwack, B.C., and Weyburn dominating the event.

Janelle Cavanagh of Chilliwack and Elmer Franks of Weyburn were undefeated, turning aside every challenge, even the "Arizona Drop" mastered by Ed Dauphinais of Yuma, Ariz., and Marlene Cavanagh of Lake Havasu, Ariz., who were hammered by the champions.

Cavanagh and Franks turned back an early lead by another Weyburn team, Melba Bent and Fred Bennett.

A team headed by Gordon Pettit and Valerie Dauphinais were shot down early in the tournament, along with Tom White and Orlanda Mainil. Forbes Cavanagh, husband of champion Janelle, was also blown away.

The biggest surprise came from Jerry Mainil, Garry Cavanagh and Buzz Bent, who in 1958 won the Weyburn Men's Curling Championship. They didn't show their previous winning form, however Bent and Cavanagh did have an excuse, as they were called up from the injured reserve list.

Other prize winners were Audrey Bennett for best sportswoman, and Rosemary White for playing with the injured Cavanagh and carrying him for three games.

Most of the Bocce team players also participated in the Jim Rose Memorial Golf Classic on Saturday, and were grateful for the hospitality shown by the people of Weyburn, particularly Fred Bennett of River Park. All said they will be back to visit again.
