Weyburn hosted Calgary, Lethbridge

Sr. Beavers win one out of three against Alberta

It was a case of Saskatchewan versus Alberta this weekend, and we didn't do as well as we hoped.

The Weyburn Senior Beavers had only one win out of three games against the Western Major Baseball League's Alberta teams, the Lethbridge Bulls and Calgary Dawgs.

The Beavers first met Lethbridge on Friday night, but the game was moved to Saturday afternoon due to rain.

The rescheduling didn't help the Beavers, who suffered a severe 10-1 loss to the Bulls.

Just a few hours later, however, the Beavers rebounded to pen the Bulls 9-5, splitting the doubleheader they had with the Alberta team.

Lethbridge faltered seriously in the evening match, committing six errors that the Beavers, who had nine hits in the first seven innings, capitalized on.

The Beavers tied up the game 3-3 in the bottom of the third, quickly gained five more runs in the next four innings, and prevented Lethbridge from scoring until the eighth, when a tiring Mike Larson was replaced on the pitching mound by Kelly Grove after the Bulls got two more runs.

The one victory proved to be Weyburn's only this weekend, however, which saw a similar 7-1 loss to the Calgary Dawgs on Sunday afternoon.

The Dawgs were up 1-0 over Weyburn when they gained four more runs in the fifth inning.

Weyburn had just one run on six hits. In the fifth inning, Travis Drader doubled to get onto second base, and advanced to third on a grounder to second base by newcomer Cole Reynolds. Drader came home on a grounder to second by third baseman Jay Miller, who was credited the RBI.

Bevan Ledingham started out on the pitching mound, throwing six strikeouts and allowing four runs on six hits. He was relieved after the fifth inning, when Kelly Grove took over for two innings. He had two runs on three hits.

Justin Beahm pitched the final two innings, allowing only one run on three hits.

As of Sunday evening, the Beavers had a 3-7 record after 10 complete games, including two away games.

The Beavers also played against the Yorkton Cardinals last night, June 10, but results are not available due to publication deadlines.

This weekend, Weyburn is out of town to play Swift Current on Sunday, June 15, but returns on Monday, June 16, for a game at Tom Laing Park with the Moose Jaw Millers. The game starts at 7:30 p.m.
