Weyburn shooter wins two titles at high-power prov.'s

Weyburn silhouette shooter Pawel Proszak added two provincial titles to his growing list of accomplishments.

He attended the silhouette high-power provincials, held over the July 5-6 weekend in Big River, Sask., and won the titles for both hunter and silhouette categories.

Proszak partly attributed his success to his new custom-made high-powered rifle, made by Saskatchewan gunsmith Ted Gaillard, as he also set a new provincial record for the highest score set at the high-powered provincials. His scores in high-powered improved by 20 per cent over previous attempts.

In the high-power category, he shot 34 out of a possible 40, and in hunter, 32 out of 40. Proszak noted this was also a personal best score.

This was his second consecutive year as winner in the silhouette category, and last year he lost the hunter category by a single point.

This past weekend Proszak took part in the .22-calibre provincials in Saskatoon. The results were not available at press time.

Silhouette shooting consists of shooting at metal silhouettes of various animal targets, placed at varying distances to increase the level of difficulty.

The distances and target sizes are different between high-powered and .22-calibre rifles, noted Proszak. For high-powered rifles, the targets are set at distances of 200, 300, 385 and 500 metres, and all shooting is done off-hand, without any support for the rifle.

The targets and distances for the .22 competition are one-fifth that of high-powered rifles, with targets at 40, 60, 77 and 100 metres.

Meantime, Proszak is gearing up for the nationals later this summer in Kamloops, where he will be defending his titles for .22-calibre rifle shooting.

"I'm really looking forward to the nationals. I think I will be one of the front-runners, but I don't want to be too cocky. We'll see how it goes," he said, adding he may not compete at provincials next year, although he may still be involved in the competition, such as by serving as shoot director.
