It's official: the Weyburn Senior Beavers are entering the first round of playoffs against the Melville Millionaires. But where the best-of-three playoff series will be held is
another question altogether. A final road trip to Melville last night was the determining factor who finished in second. Results from the Weyburn-Melville match-up are not available due to publication deadlines. Either way, the playoffs will be held this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, July 31-Aug. 2. Whoever is in second will have two of the games played in their home town. The Beavers split a series with the Yorkton Cardinals and took a hard loss to Swift Current on July 22, the game which sparked the dismissal of head coach Eugene Emberley. In that match, Weyburn led the Swift Current Indians for most of the game, on the strength of a single run scored by Cole Reynolds in the first inning. Mike Collins had been credited with the RBI after reaching first base on a fielder's choice. Starting on the mound for Weyburn was Tyrel Hansen, who threw five strikeouts and allowed only three hits. Hansen was relieved in the sixth by Kelly Grove, when Swift Current finally scored their first run. During the game, tensions had been building and finally came to a head in the Beavers' dugout when in-fighting broke out between the players and coaches, particularly between one player and coach Eugene Emberley. The internal dispute seemed to sign Weyburn's death warrant; they only got three hits in the remaining innings, while Swift Current scored two and three runs respectively in the last two innings. Grove was switched off for the final batter in the ninth, striking out the last Indian's batter. The final score was 6-1. Eugene and his son, Landon, were absent from Thursday's match-up against Yorkton at Tom Laing Field, which was their final regular season home game. At first, it looked like Weyburn had been set up for a loss. Yorkton was leading 3-0 until the fourth inning, when Jason Miller finally brought in their first run. The RBI was credited to Justin Beahm. Yorkton extended their lead to 4-1 in the fifth inning, and seemingly had the game in hand. Then, Weyburn cut their deficit in half by the seventh, Beahm was hit by a pitch and later came home on an RBI single from Collins. Weyburn secured their victory in the eighth, when an RBI double by Tyrel Hansen got the ball rolling by bringing home Miller. Reynolds then came up to bat after a walk by Beahm, and hit a triple that brought in both Hansen and Beahm home. He then brought in a run off a fly out to left field from Travis Drader. The Beavers then held Yorkton back in the ninth inning, securing a surprise 6-4 victory. Weyburn's game on Saturday night with the Cardinals ended with less beneficial results. The two teams battled back and forth for most of the game. Weyburn's crowning moment was in the fifth inning, when they battled back from a 4-2 deficit with five runs, putting them in the lead 7-4. Yorkton turned the tables on them just an inning later, however, with seven runs in the sixth. Weyburn only scored once more to end the game at 11-8. Reynolds was the top scorer with three runs, while Tyrel Hansen contributed two. Single runs were scored by Mike Collins, Derek Houle and Adam Balan. Bevan Ledingham started for the Beavers as pitcher, allowing eight hits and six earned runs before being relieved in the sixth by Reynolds. |
