Over 2,300 see 197 riders compete in Weyburn Rodeo

The Weyburn Lions Rodeo was held on Aug. 9 and 10 at the exhibition grounds, in conjunction with the Weyburn Wheat Festival, with 197 competitors taking part in the events.

The rodeo was staged by the Lions Club and the Weyburn Agricultural Society. Attendance was similar to last year's levels at just over 2,300, with organizers blaming the hot sun on Sunday afternoon for keeping the numbers the same.

The rodeo will continue to be held in conjunction with the annual festival, said Brian Lanktree of the Lions Club, noting the organizers are also bound by the Canadian Cowboys Association which sets the rodeos around the province. Weyburn's event was one of four rodeos taking place over the weekend in Saskatchewan.

In calf roping, there were 24 entries, and the top three ropers were Wayne Warkentin in first, Roger Dunham in second and Darrell Taypolat in third.

For team roping, Brian Guest and Stacy Cornet won first, Terry Duncalfe and Murray Moran placed second, and Tyler Quam and Ryan Beierbach came in third place.

In steer wrestling, the top performers out of 24 entries were, Dallas Walker in first, Mark Peters in second and Wayne Resch in third.

The saddle bronc event had 16 entries, with the top rider being Jerome Rogan in first, followed by Aaron Moen in second and Jim Lyons in third.

In bareback bronc riding, Jonathan Kmita took first place and Brian Schira won second. There were eight entries.

There were 24 racers in the ladies barrel-racing event, with Donna Leibrand taking first place, Rachelle Boyes in second and Kelly Byrne in third.

In Jr. Girls barrels, for riders aged 16 and under, first place was won by Whitney Harding, second went to April Callander and third was Cheyenne Butter.

In the bull-riding event, there were 15 entries, and a tie for first place between Zane Lambert and J.J. Koopman, with second going to Aaron Roy and third to Matthew Roy.
