Two local army cadets earn awards at training centre

Two local army cadets earned awards while attending the Army Cadet Summer Training Centre in Vernon, B.C.

Cadet Aerock Hallberg took leadership training at the centre, and was presented with the Cadet Medal of Merit by the Army, Navy and Air Force Veterans organization at the centre's final parade of the summer.

The award goes to the outstanding cadets on each of the Cadet Leader Instructor Courses at the centre. Hallberg was taking the CLI Rifle Coach Course. He is a member of the 2303 Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps based in Weyburn.

Master Warrant Officer Aimee Procyk of Fillmore was also recognized, as she was presented with the Sword of Honour at the final parade held at the Vernon training centre this summer.

The award is presented to the outstanding Company Sergeant Major at the training centre, based on his or her performance throughout the summer.

She was the Company Sergeant Major for Echo Company, and spent the summer providing leadership and instruction to three intakes of basic cadets, who were experiencing a cadet summer camp for the first time, and two intakes of the three-week Basic Marksman Course.

Each basic cadet course lasted two weeks, during which the cadets are introduced to community living and the basic skills needed for longer courses in the future. They also took part in a field training exercise, a summer biathlon and a new mini-confidence course.

The ceremonial events at the training centre included the annual Drumhead Service, and the basic cadets were spectators at the final parade and Sunset Ceremony, in which almost 1,000 cadets, staff cadets and officers were on parade.

Procyk was joined in Vernon by her sister Janice, who took a six-week cadet leader course.
