It's time for another season of soccer for the Comp Eagles. The high school girls' soccer team held its first practice on Aug. 26 at Jubilee Park, and their first exhibition game was last night, Sept. 3. Coach Scott Benning said he has a good mix of Grade 9-12 students coming out this year, filling a hole in their roster left by a group of graduating Grade 12 players this spring. Benning said many of the girls had been members of the Red Devils' soccer squad, who won the fair play award at provincials this spring. This gives his squad the benefit of some experience but also team chemistry, because they all know each other and get along well, he said. This is Benning's third year as coach of the Eagles, and he's hoping for it to be his best. That's because the team is hosting the 4A girls' soccer provincials on Oct. 24-25, and the Eagles are automatically slotted into the tournament. "This is the first time hosting provincials so we're excited about it." The Eagles will have a number of away and home games leading up to provincials, but their first significant home action will be this Saturday, Sept. 6, when they hold their first home tourney. |
