The Emberley family, along with an out-of-town member of the 2003 Weyburn Senior Beavers, recently returned home with silver medals from the Canadian Senior Men's Baseball Championship in Windsor, Ont., from Aug. 20-25. Eugene Emberley, his two sons Landon and Dustin, and former Senior Beaver Mike Collins, were all members of the Saskatchewan men's team, competing alongside provincial teams from Alberta, B.C., Ontario, the Maritimes and Quebec. Eugene served as assistant coach on the team, while Dustin, Landon and Collins were players. The competition was first divided into two pools, with Saskatchewan being slotted into two pools. In the first day of competition on Aug. 21, Saskatchewan defeated B.C. 10-0, with Landon hitting a solo home run. Later that day, Saskatchewan went on to defeat the host team, Windsor, by a score of 2-1. On Aug. 22, Saskatchewan crushed Alberta 9-0. Dustin and Collins were named top hitters on the team, as Dustin hit three singles and Collins had a single and a home run. Saskatchewan moved on to Nova Scotia the next day, defeating them 3-1 and finishing out of their pool undefeated. In the semi-final on Aug. 24, Saskatchewan defeated Ontario 8-0. Landon and Collins both contributed with one double. In the final gold medal game, Saskatchewan met with Quebec. This time, a flawless pitching performance by their opponents undermined Saskatchewan's offence, and they lost 2-1. Landon was credited with a single and a double during the finals. During all six games, Saskatchewan had only four runs scored against them, with Quebec showing the strongest offence. Collins, a native of Nanaimo, B.C., played with the Sr. Beavers for the first time during the 2003 season, coming here from Minot State University. |
