Organizers of the Terry Fox Run in Weyburn, Fillmore, Lang, Milestone and Creelman are looking for the support of residents when the annual fund-raiser is held next week. Wendy Neiszner, organizer of the Run in Weyburn, said pledge sheets can be found in all banks throughout the city, but participants can simply show up the day of the run - Sunday, Sept. 14 - and make donations there. The Terry Fox Run in Weyburn will be held at River Park, using the track that extends through Tatagwa Parkway. The event starts at 1 p.m., though participants can show up throughout the afternoon. Participants are welcome to run, walk, bike or rollerblade through the course, which is just over three kilometres long. Neiszner said they are also selling Terry Fox merchandise for the second year in a row. T-shirts cost $10 and $15 for children and adults respectively, while hats are $12. All merchandise can be purchased at City Hall, or at River Park the day of the run. Last year's event in Weyburn had a significantly lower turnout than other years, as 30 participants showed up and raised only $600. So, said Neiszner, they're hoping to have at least double the number of participants out this year for the Run. In Fillmore, residents may find pledge sheets for the Terry Fox Run at the village office, or organizer Debbie Beare can personally deliver them. The Run in Fillmore will also be held on Sept. 14, starting at the Fillmore Rec Centre. Beare said she hopes to have 50 or so participants in the Run and beat Fillmore's record, which hovers around $2,000. Beare said they'll be selling shirts and hats, but also Terry Fox Run magnets for $1 apiece. This year, The Terry Fox Run in Lang will begin at 1 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 12, with Lang School serving as the starting point. A hot dog sale will be held at the same time there. Organizer Greg Happ said this year they're doing a special "community challenge" where eight volunteers from local businesses and organizations have agreed to put out special pledge jars throughout Lang. Each runner owns his or her own jar and, for every $2 put in them, the runner must do one lap. Happ said the Milestone RCMP will also be on hand to sort of kick off the event by doing an inaugural lap with the sirens blaring. Regular pledge sheets may be found at the Lang Credit Union. In Creelman, organizer Sharon Allan said pledge sheets for the Run can be found at the community store and cafe. Allan said Creelman residents raised $1,000 last year for the Run, so she's hoping for the community to hit that target again. Finally, in Milestone, organizer Sheryl Elford said a number of local businesses have pledge forms, but participants can also contact the Assisted Living Program or just show up on Sept. 14. Because a lot of seniors are involved in this event, the Run is only a kilometre in Milestone, getting underway at 2 p.m. Elford said Milestone raises over $900 a year for the Run, though because cancer has touched the lives of virtually everyone in the community, it's important for everyone to participate. This year, Elford said they will be handing out shirts and hats as door prizes for participants. There will also be baking and refreshments available afterwards. The 23rd annual Terry Fox Run is one of Canada's largest fund-raisers. Roughly 89 cents of every dollar raised goes towards cancer research, according to the Terry Fox Foundation. |
