The Red Wings opened the 2003-2004 season with a 2-1 victory over the Yorkton Terriers on Friday. Newcomer Jordan Stevenson scored Weyburn's first goal against the Terriers at 4:44 in the first period, assisted by Rick Wood and Greg Park. Yorkton retaliated with a power play goal towards the end of the period. Another newcomer, Peter MacDougall ,scored the game-winning goal at 5:51 in the second period, assisted by Kory McEwan. No one scored during the third period. Starting goalie Cale Jordison guarded the net for Weyburn, playing all three periods and blocking 35 out of 36 shots. Todd Veary shifted for Yorkton on the other end, with 19 shots on goal made by the Wings. The game that night was dedicated to the late Josh Campbell, who died in his rookie year with the Terriers in a car accident just 10 games into the season. His No. 8 jersey was retired in a pre-game ceremony. The Wings also played a game last night, Sept. 23, against the Melville Millionaires, but results are not available due to publication deadlines. The Wings enter the regular season on a high note, having put in a strong performance in the pre-season. Their final exhibition game was on Sept. 16, when they lost out to Notre Dame 4-3. Counting the loss, Weyburn's final pre-season record was 4-3-2 in nine games, second overall in the Sherwood Conference. Weyburn continues their two-week road trip with three games over the weekend, including two games with the La Ronge Ice Wolves on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 26-27. Saturday's game will be held in Stanley Mission. They also play the Nipawin Hawks on Sunday, Sept. 28. The Wings do not play a regular season home game until Friday, Oct. 3, when they host the Terriers in the newly-renovated Colosseum. Wings trade playing rights On Friday, the Wings transferred the playing rights of right winger Lonny Erasmus of Yellowknife, N.W.T., to the St. Albert Saints for future considerations. Erasmus played 61 games last year during the regular season for the Winkler Flyers in Manitoba, accumulating 18 goals and 20 assists. |
