Some towns and villages in southeastern Saskatchewan will hold elections along with the cities on the Monday, Oct. 22 municipal election day, while others will continue with the same people in council and yet others must ask a second time for nominations. The final day for filing nominations for municipal office was Sept. 24. Fillmore, Yellow Grass, Midale and Stoughton are the four most enthusiastic communities when it comes to the fall election. In the Village of Fillmore, Marvin Chambers was acclaimed as mayor, but an election will be held for council. Returning officer, Donna Pringle, received five nominations for four village council positions. "People just decided they wanted an election this year," she said, adding that even more nominations were entered for the last election. For Fillmore's council, Johanna Taylor, William Wall, Ron Collins, Cam Hart and Gordon Pollock will vie for the council positions. In Yellow Grass, three people put their name forward for mayor. Dalton Hockley, Bill Wilkie and Dan Demarchi's names will be on the ballot on voting day. For town council, no election will be necessary as newcomer Wendy Carver will join incumbents Rod Richards, Dale Dixon, Barry Murray, Louise Crozier and Chuck Shugart. In Midale, the mayor was acclaimed but an election will be held among eight candidates for six seats on council. Incumbent mayor Currie Swenson will return, while incumbent aldermen Allan Hauglum, Armond Hauglum, Dorothy Fonstead, Wayne Pick, Rob Scheirer, will vie with new candidates, Barry Scott, Linda Shukin and Kiley Craig. In the Town of Stoughton, incumbent mayor Gerald Mamer was returned by acclamation. But an election will be held for council as seven people have been nominated for the six council positions. The names of Ken Bahnuick, Don Knibbs, Blaine Morrison, Tom Sangster, Jody Seifert, Ken Shields, and John Wilton will be on the election ballot for council. In the Town of Francis, Cliff Knoll was returned by acclamation to the position of mayor, but only five aldermen were nominated for the six-person council. That means the town must ask a second time for one more person to stand for council. In the Village of Lang, both the mayor's seat and the four councillors were acclaimed. Al Broderick was acclaimed as mayor while newcomer Scott Williams joins incumbents Bill Missal, Adele Schmidt and Ray Seib on council. In Ogema, no election will be needed. Incumbent Wayne Myren was returned as mayor and all incumbent councillors were returned by acclamation. In Creelman, another nomination call is required for a fourth councillor. For mayor, incumbent Don Anslow was returned by acclamation, while newcomer Mark Graham joins incumbents Miles Mostowchuk and George Patterson on council. In Ceylon, there will be no election. One new alderman, Ron Hovanak, replaces a departing councillor while the incumbent mayor, Larry Harkes, was acclaimed. Oct. 8 is the second nomination day set by the Municipal Relations division of Saskatchewan department of Government Relations and Aboriginal Affairs. |
