Tournament on Oct. 24-25

Weyburn first-time host for 4A girls soccer prov.'s

This Thursday, Oct. 9, will mark the final league game of the season for the Comp Eagles girls' soccer team, as they host Caronport at Jubilee Park at 4 p.m.

After that, the girls get into practice mode, as they prepare to host the 4A Girls Soccer Provincials in Weyburn on Oct. 24-25.

This is the first time the Saskatchewan High School Athletics Association has moved the provincials to Weyburn, said event commissioner Gary Frederickson.

"Having the provincials here is a great way to profile the girls' program in Weyburn," said Frederickson.

Tournament organizers are seeking volunteers who can help out as linesmen, field marshals and concession operators.

Anyone interested in volunteering one or both days can contact Scott Benning at home or at the Weyburn Inland Terminal, or Gary Frederickson at the Comp.

Games will take place at Jubilee Park and the Weyburn Comprehensive School soccer field, which is located behind the school.

Quarter finals and semi-finals will be held on Friday, Oct. 24, starting at 9 a.m. The consolation, bronze and gold finals will be held on Saturday, Oct. 25, starting at 10 a.m.

This basically guarantees each team entered two games, or three if they win at least one of those two games.

Entered in the event will be seven qualifiers from 12 provincial districts, who will be determined by Saturday, Oct. 18.

However, because Weyburn is the host team, they get an automatic berth in the provincials.

That's why the Eagles will be practicing hard over the next two and a half weeks, gearing up for their shot at the provincial crown.

"We're just going to continue to work the same things we've been building on all year," said coach Scott Benning.

"Number one, that's our defending; our finishing, which is getting the ball into their net; and just our overall ball control.

Eagles 1-1-1 in home tourney

The Eagles hosted a four-team soccer tournament at the Comp soccer field and Jubilee Park on Friday and Saturday.

Their first game on Friday ended in a 1-1 tie with Birtle, Man. Britt Pegg scored Weyburn's sole goal.

On Saturday, Melissa Dreis and Drina Leippy each scored goals for a 2-0 win over Delisle. The Eagles then lost 1-0 to Balgonie.

"The whole tournament was pretty even. Pretty much everybody split (1-1-1)," said Benning.

The Eagles also defeated Moose Jaw Peacock on Thursday 2-0. Pegg and Anita Trenaman scored goals.
