Penny Wars, the annual fund-raiser by the Weyburn Comprehensive School for the United Way Communithon, gets underway this week with a friendly contest between the various SAS rooms. Pennies are positive points and silver are negative points in the push to be the top point-getter. Some days are double-point days and students receive double points if the coins are wrapped. Another money maker is the "Battle of the Bands", where each day next a different band will perform at lunchtime, and students vote with money for their favourite group. There will also be a wacky hair day and a lollipop sale. All of this is sponsored by the SRC to raise money for the United Way's 17 member agencies in Weyburn. The jazz band and choirs will also provide entertainment during the Communithon telecast on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25. A special presentation will be made at WCS on Monday, Oct. 20, when Norbert Georget, a Saskatoon paramedic, presents his message about the effects of drinking and driving. SADD is an active group at the school and hopes the presentation will expand the knowledge of the students of this issue. Following his presentation, the Weyburn Credit Union, who is helping to sponsor Norbert, is hosting a beef-on-a-bun luncheon for all staff and students. The WCS debate team will be attending their first tournament of the year in Moose Jaw on Friday. The junior boys volleyball team will be in Fillmore on Thursday, and then will co-host a tournament at the Comp on Saturday along with the junior girls team. The senior girls will be off to Swift Current. The WCS football team has a bye week and playoffs will begin Thursday, Oct. 23. The team suffered its second loss of the season to F.W. Johnson on Friday by a score of 13-7. The cross-country running team did well in Wawota this past week, and some will advance to provincials this Saturday. Next week is High School Athletics Week across Saskatchewan, and as part of the celebration there will be an exhibition university girls basketball game at the Comp. The University of Brandon Bobcats will take on Briercrest Bible Institute Cougars for two games on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 24-25. Action gets underway at 8 p.m. on both days. Another event showcasing high school sports will be the 4A Provincial Girls' Soccer Championship, to be held at Jubilee Park and Darold Kot Field on the same weekend, Oct. 24-25. Eight of the best girls' soccer teams in the province will be here from the larger schools to try and claim the gold medal. |
