Comp School continues to raise funds for United Way

The Weyburn Comprehensive School is continuing with its "Penny Wars" fund-raiser for this weekend's Communithon, which starts on Friday, Oct. 24.

The school's choirs and jazz band will perform in the Communithon broadcast, which runs from 8 a.m. Friday morning through to 5 p.m. on Saturday.

The SADD presentation held on Monday at the Comp was well received, and the staff and students were treated to a barbecued beef meal provided by the Weyburn Credit Union in support of Canadian beef producers.

This week is Saskatchewan High School Athletics Week, and there are a number of activities to help celebrate the contribution of athletics to high school life and to the community itself.

This fall there are 151 students involved in such sports as cross-country running, volleyball, girls' soccer, golf, football and cheerleaders. Later this school year other sports will also start up, including basketball, curling, badminton and track, so by the end of the year over 200 students will have taken part in sporting activities.

There are many economic benefits to the community from these events, such as the 4A provincial girls soccer championships to be held here this weekend, to which seven teams of 15 to 20 players each will be visiting the city.

The provincial soccer event starts at 9 a.m. Friday morning at Jubilee Park and Darold Kot Field, and there will also be exhibition college girls' basketball on Friday and Saturday evenings at 8 p.m. both nights in the Comp gym.

The Comp finished fifth as a team at the cross-country provincials, and in senior girls volleyball, the team finished fifth in a tournament at Swift Current. The senior boys placed fourth in a tournament in Moose Jaw, and the junior volleyball teams hosted a tournament over the past weekend with Weyburn Two winning the girls' side and Regina the boys' side. The Weyburn boys' team finished third.

The Redcoat Series of volleyball between Weyburn and Estevan will have the Weyburn portion on Thursday, Oct. 30.

The football team finished second in their conference and will have the bye this week as football playoffs begin. Their first playoff game will be on Wednesday, Oct. 29.
