On Wednesday afternoon, two Weyburn Comprehensive School students, Ashton Pitre and Lindsay Geisler, loaned a helping hand to a young girl struck by a van while riding her bike. The next day, the two students were honoured by the Violence Intervention Program (VIP) with certificates congratulating them for their "act of kindness." VIP was out in the community on Thursday handing out certificates for random acts of kindness, which could be as small as obeying the speed limit or stopping for a red light. Noreen Dammann, a volunteer with the program, said they were doing this "to promote VIP and to make people aware we exist." Whereas most of these certificates were handed out at random, VIP made a special effort to award Geisler and Pitre, going over to the Comp in the morning. The incident occurred in the alley between Ash Drive and King Street around 3 p.m. The girl, whose parents asked to be left unidentified, was riding her bike when she was hit by a van. Though not hurt, Geisler said the girl was "shaking" badly. The two Comp students helped her up, got her to her brother and phoned the girl's mother afterwards. "We're really pleased you did something kind," said Dammann to Geisler and Pitre. |
