The Weyburn Horticultural Society held its regular meeting on Oct. 22 at Signal Hill Arts Centre, and named the winners of the veggie contest held as part of the Charity Bazaar at the mall. President Shirley Jacob welcomed members and guests. Members were reminded of the provincial horticulture convention in Rosetown on Nov. 7-8. Forms are available from Tory Metheral. The fall festival contest held at the Charity Bazaar was a success, and Eleanor Clay won the draw for the birdhouse. There were 23 entries for the contest, with prizes given for the largest veggies. For potatoes, the winner was J. Robins; onions, Goretti Pennington; watermelon, Janice Wagner; sunflower, Paloma and Konrad Proszak; zucchini, Betty Poganray; carrot, Janice Wagner. The most unusual carrot was from Gennie Girardin; most unusual potato, Annie Legin; most unusual tomato, Sylvia Megenbir; and the vegetable of choice was shown by Julia Mandziak. In the pumpkin contest, Dustin Wagner had both the best jack o'lantern and painted pumpkin, and Jared Wagner had the best decorated pumpkin. A nominating committee was formed to select a new executive. The next meeting will be held Wednesday, Nov. 26 at Signal Hill. Members are asked to bring Christmas baking and a gift of a $5 value for a gift exchange. |
