The Comp Eagles girls soccer team ended their season on Friday at the 4A Provincials in Weyburn, losing two games to Balgonie and Prince Albert Carlton to finish out of the top four placings. Eight teams, including Weyburn as the host team, were out this weekend at the 4A provincials, which were held Friday and Saturday at Jubilee Park and the Weyburn Comprehensive School, on Darold Kot Field. Playing a decisive role in much of Friday's action was the weather, as players were battered by high winds, freezing temperatures, intermittent rain and - for those playing at Darold Kot Field - dust clouds rising off the track. It was a norm to go to soccer games and see girls huddled together under coats, blankets and even tarps, as one team even draped a tarp over the side of a school bus to provide them shelter from the wind. The weather was definitely a factor in Weyburn's first game versus Balgonie, which ended 2-0. "Their first game, they probably played as a team as strong as they've played all year," said coach Scott Benning. "We actually dominated the possession, definitely with the wind and for pretty big stretches without the wind as well." Weyburn missed goals on at least a few instances, however, due to the strong winds. "Everybody was in the same wind, we just had trouble shooting with that crosswind," said Benning. "We were disappointed not to win that first game, definitely, but we're certainly not disappointed in how they played." The weather eased up a bit in the afternoon, but Weyburn still had difficulty moving the ball into Prince Albert's zone at Jubilee Park. Their opponents managed three goals to win the game and advance into Saturday's playoffs. The Eagles played all right enough in the second match, but had to keep repeating and didn't get the ball in the net, said Benning. If anything good came out of Friday, it was the Eagles' obvious determination in the tournament. "They worked right to the end. They kept supporting each other. They kept upbeat," he said. A significantly higher calibre of play was shown on Saturday, when the weather died down and allowed the top teams in the province to play off. If you watched any of it, said Benning, you could see a lot of really strong and physical players. Compared to them, "I thought we gave ourselves a good showing" Prince Albert went on to lose the consolation final to Regina LeBoldus 3-1. Balgonie finished fourth after losing to Caronport 2-0 in the bronze medal match. The gold medal match was between Saskatoon Evan Hardy and Swift Current, with Saskatoon taking the provincial title by winning the game 3-1. The Eagles now look to their next season, which will feature much of the same crop of young girls as this year; there are only three Grade 12 students on this year's team, including Mandy Borshowa, Drina Leippy and Anita Trenaman. The team's roster also includes Desiree Smith, Jenna Stewart, Kayla Giroux, Leila Caixeta, Lindsey Piel, Melissa Dreis, Britt Pegg, Cherisse Rainey, Julie-Ann Paslawski, Kaitlyn Fraser, Skylar Fraser, Tallie Gutzke, Yasuko Ohara, Angelina Coccimiglio, Camille Megenbir and Nichol Thomson. |
