Skate Canada Sectionals in Weyburn this November 6-9

Five local figure skaters will be competing for spots on provincial teams this week as Weyburn hosts the Skate Canada Saskatchewan Sectionals from Thursday to Sunday, Nov. 6-9.

Kelsey and Jayme Nagy, Vanessa Erickson, Vicky Schultz and Paloma Proszak are among the 75 skaters entered into the sectionals, which is sponsored by the Bank of Montreal Financial Group.

The sectionals serve as the jumping-board to three larger events, said event chairperson Susan Hagel. The top four skaters in the pre-novice, novice, junior, senior and juvenile categories are typically chosen for the provincial team heading to one of the three major events.

Skaters in the pre-novice, novice and junior classes will go on to the Skate Canada Western Challenge, while skaters in the senior class go on to the Canadian Championships. Juvenile skaters go on to the Junior National Championships.

The three-day event will be held at the Colosseum, starting each day with practices. The actual competition starts at 4 p.m. and runs until roughly 10:30 p.m. on Thursday.

Competition also runs from 2 to 9:30 p.m. and 1 to 8:30 p.m. on Friday and Saturday respectively. The sectionals end with an awards brunch and medal presentation on Sunday morning at McKenna Hall.

Among the more notable skaters at the event is Nicole Watt of Saskatoon, who served on Canada's national team and skated internationally.

Watt will be skating a short program on Friday night at approximately 7 p.m., said Hagel, noting schedules do fluctuate depending on the day's progress.

The event is open to the public and there is no admission.
