Donations keep coming in

Redesign of children's library steaming ahead

The Weyburn Public Library's ongoing redesign of the children's area received another boost last week when the Young Fellows Club donated $2,500 to the project.

That means the next step - colourful, height-appropriate shelving for children - will go ahead right away, said an excited city librarian Michele Fedyk on Wednesday.

"I was thrilled," she said of the donation.

"We're over halfway in our fund-raising for the project, with $5,650 raised so far," said Fedyk.

Donations are already being put to use, she said. A pyramid for displaying books and doors to the toy shelves are already in place and the new shelving will be up before the end of the year.

"Once the shelving is up, people will really begin to see a difference and see that it's a worthwhile project," said Fedyk. "It will be more attractive and user-friendly for children."

Fedyk notes that all work is being done by local contractors to keep the dollars donated by service clubs in the local community.

The library will be a busy place for the public in November.

Lori Buchanan from Tymeless Accents will demonstrate how to make a seasonal willow wreath on Wednesday, Nov. 12 from 7-9 p.m.

Award-winning Saskatoon author Shelley Leedahl will read from her adult novel on Tuesday, Nov. 18 from 7-9 p.m. and will give a children's reading on Wednesday, Nov. 19 from 10-10:30 a.m.

The library has also begun a series of computer education programs for the public.

One session, on surfing the Internet, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 13 from 7-8 p.m. Another session, to teach how to open a mailbox on the Internet, will be held on Thursday, Nov. 20 from 7-8:30 p.m.

The library has hired a student to help with the training for work stations, said Fedyk.

"Now a lot of seniors are taking advantage of it and we welcome anyone to come, even if they are afraid to be online. Our programs are not intensive but offer just enough to put people at ease with use of the Internet," she said.

The programs show how to send a message to relatives overseas or find a wealth of information at one's fingertips, said Fedyk. "We're really proud to have the library at the forefront of this training. Sometimes all people need is a way to ease the fear of computers."
