The Red Wings put their newest goaltender to the test this weekend on their three-game northern road swing, which ended in one win and two losses for the injury-stricken team. Brenden Cuthbert, 19, last played for the WHL Medicine Hat Tigers in the 2002-2003 season. According to the Tigers' website, he posted 14 wins and 21 losses last season. He played in two games this weekend against Kindersley and North Battleford. His addition eases a bit of the pressure on Weyburn's goaltending line-up, which saw the departure of rookie Brandon Lazeski last week. That had left goaltending duties solely up to Kevin Magee, as Cale Jordison is still out with a hand injury. "(Cuthbert) was available and he's a good goaltender," said coach Dwight McMillan on Monday. "We like the way he plays and we like his attitude and his focus and everything else." Cuthbert was successful in his first outing for Weyburn on Friday, defending the net to a 3-1 victory against the Kindersley Klippers. Cuthbert received 32 shots on net, blocking 31. On the flip side, Weyburn made 25 shots on goal against Kindersley goalie Steve Houghton. The first period of Friday's game remained scoreless, but the Klippers scored a goal five minutes into the second. Before the period ended, however, Clayton Bastura scored on an assist from Greg Lasko. Steve Pearce and Ryan Kuntz scored two more goals in the third period to leave the score at 3-1, assisted on both counts by Greg Park. Saturday's game versus the Battlefords North Stars was a different deal entirely, as the Wings received a 6-2 beating. The score was 1-1 after the first period, with Park scoring Weyburn's first goal on a power play, assisted by Bastura and Jordan Stevenson. Then, the North Stars ran away with the game, scoring three unanswered goals in the second and two more in the third. Shayne Emmons added the final goal of the game on a power play at 19:41, assisted by Pearce. Cuthbert was in net for Weyburn, receiving 34 shots on goal. The Wings also made 34 shots against North Battleford. Sunday's game against Humboldt was the hardest-fought, as the Broncos edged out Weyburn by a mere 2-1. Ryan Kuntz scored Weyburn's only goal on a power play in the first period, assisted by Park. The game got a little rough in the second period, as several players from both rosters got into a brawl just before the end. Magee replaced Cuthbert in net, receiving 33 shots on goal from Humboldt. Weyburn made 30 shots against the Broncos. McMillan was overall pleased with the Red Wings' efforts on the road swing, although they only posted one win. "I think that we played two excellent hockey games Friday night in Kindersley and Sunday night in Humboldt," he said. "(On Saturday in North Battleford) we let them get away on us in the last half of the game." The key to getting some more wins will be to get over their injury troubles; the Wings have had some players, like Jarod Eagles, sidelined for most of the season, and others like Cory Snyder and Ryan Grona have been on and off sporadically. "If we get consistency health-wise, I think we'll do all right," he said. "It's tough when you're always juggling guys in and out of the line-up." The Red Wings are home this weekend to host the Melfort Mustangs on Friday, Nov. 14. The game starts at 7:30 p.m. at the Colosseum. They don't hit the ice again until Tuesday, Nov. 18, when they head up the road to play the Notre Dame Hounds in Wilcox. The game starts at 8 p.m. |
