Weyburn in second place

Red Wings rack up goals for 10-3 win over Melfort

By KEVIN BERGER of the Weyburn Review

The Red Wings pulled a neat magic trick on Friday night at the Colosseum, making the Melfort Mustangs' goalies vanish into thin air during the third period.

Actually, they were still there, but the Red Wings were scoring like they weren't.

Weyburn pulled off one of their most commanding victories of the season that night, crushing the visiting Mustangs 10-3.

The two teams had been relatively close going into the third period, although Weyburn had a 4-2 lead on Melfort.

In the third, however, Melfort's defence broke down completely, and Weyburn scored a whopping six consecutive goals. Switching Anton Wintner out of Melfort's net after the first three goals didn't help, as replacement Jesse Rowe had three goals scored against him as well.

Rick Wood, who netted two assists that night, said Melfort's goalies were maybe struggling a bit, but Weyburn was making some pretty good shots.

"People were shooting the puck, and when you shoot the puck, good things will happen," he said.

Scoring for Weyburn were Clayton Bastura, on two goals; Jereme Tendler, on two; Greg Park, Greg Lasko, Ryan Kuntz, Jerid Corbett, Tyler Mills and Frankie Dicks.

Remaining assists were picked up by Tendler, with three assists; Shayne Emmons, with three; Kuntz, with two; and singles from Park, Corbett, Matt Wheeler, Justin Magnuson and Steve Pearce.

Brenden Cuthbert made his hometown debut against Melfort, receiving 21 shots on goal. Meanwhile, Weyburn made 43 shots on Melfort's net, mostly in the third period.

The Red Wings also played last night, Nov. 18, in Wilcox versus the Notre Dame Hounds. Results are not available due to publication deadlines.

Friday night's play was not just indicative of a weak goaltending performance by Melfort, but also of strong offence from Weyburn, some of whom have emerged as top scorers in the league.

Although he ranks below Shayne Emmons and Jereme Tendler for total points, one surprise leader has been second-year veteran Rick Wood, who was chosen last week as the most impressive individual debut in the SJHL as part of a web poll by Prairie Sportslink.

Though he doesn't put much stock by the poll, saying any number of guys could've fit into that, Wood has been having a good season; as of Nov. 18, he was leading the Wings in assists with 16, and has netted seven goals otherwise.

Wood admits that he's having a better season than last year because he feels "a lot more comfortable on the ice," and because last year he had to adjust to being away from home.

"I'm having a decent season, but it could always get better," he said.

This week, the Wings are home for two games against Estevan and Kindersley.

They host the Estevan Bruins on Friday, Nov. 21, at 7:30 p.m., and the Kindersley Klippers on Sunday, Nov. 23, at 3 p.m. Both games are at the Colosseum.

Next Wednesday, Nov. 26, the Red Wings host the Notre Dame Hounds.

The Red Wings are also hosting Hockey Night at the Library this Thursday, Nov. 20, from 7-8 p.m.

The Red Wings will be reading stories and doing crafts with children ages three and up and their families. No admission is charged.

Those planning to attend are asked to pre-register by calling the Weyburn Public Library.
