Comp students holding 'Food Fight' for food bank

This past week has been busy at the Weyburn Comprehensive School with activities in and out of school, plus the "Food Fight" competition is heating up between rooms.

As part of the Food Fight competition, which is bringing in food items for the Weyburn food bank at the Salvation Army, many rooms have a number challenges going on to see which one can bring in the most food. Some students and teachers have been accused of underhanded methods to try and claim the victory. The event wraps up on Friday, Dec. 12.

The school's semi-formal Blitzen Ball, the annual Christmas dance for students and invited guests, will be held on Friday, Dec. 12 in the Cafetorium.

In the past week, the WCS chapter of SADD (Students Against Drunk Driving) held their family fun night on Wednesday, plus a capacity crowd took in the Concert Series performance by Henri Loiselle, accompanied by Weyburn's Cherith Alexander and the Assiniboia Park choir under the direction of Colleen Weimer.

On Sunday, at the Festival of Carols, the STARS choir performed in the afternoon, and in the evening numbers were presented by the Grade 10 choir, the Grade 11 and 12 choir and finally by the combined choir. A standing ovation was given to the combined choir for their performance.

The WCS debate team took part in a tournament in Yorkton, and then had to stay overnight in Melville because of the poor road conditions.

The icy roads also played havoc with the basketball schedule on the weekend. The senior girls travelled to Regina on Friday for a tournament at Miller where they lost to Regina Campbell, but the team was unable to return on Saturday to finish the tournament. The senior boys participated in and won a tournament at Regina Martin. They won two games Thursday and returned on Saturday evening to defeat Moose Jaw Central and claim the tournament championship for the second year in a row.

Winnipeg St. Paul's came to Weyburn on Friday, and the senior boys defeated them in an exhibition game. The junior girls and boys also had a tourney, but it was greatly disrupted by the weather as teams went home Friday night and weren't able to return on Saturday.

This weekend organizers hope to have better luck with a junior/senior girls tournament in Weyburn, and the senior boys at a tournament in Prince Albert. After this weekend, there will be no tournaments until the new year.
