A Canadian legend in heavyweight boxing will be making a brief return trip to Weyburn on Wednesday, Jan. 14, to address the students at the Comprehensive School about drug abuse. George Chuvalo, who reigned as Canadian heavyweight boxing champion from 1958 to 1979, spoke before in Weyburn, back in 1997. Though a renowned boxer who faced such greats as Muhammed Ali and George Foreman, Chuvalo has experienced considerable personal turmoil through the loss of three sons and a wife to substance abuse. Chuvalo has spoken to students throughout Canada, and was recognized for his efforts by being named to the Order of Canada in 1998. Chuvalo is being brought to Weyburn by the organization Kids Against Drugs, said principal Ken Larson. |
