The Bantam Esso Canadians have been on a winning streak since the Christmas holidays, scoring three victories over the Moose Jaw Prairie Oasis Tempo Stars and winning a tournament in Saskatoon. On Dec. 27, just prior to their Saskatoon tournament, the Canadians played host to the Tempo Stars. This was the first meeting between the two teams, but the Canadians prevailed and won 2-1. Bolstered by aggressive forechecking, Weyburn scored first on a goal by Eden Leippy, who was assisted by linemates Jordan Irwin and Kourtney McCutcheon. The Canadians completed their three-game series with the Prairie Oasis Tempo Stars in a pair of games on Friday and Sunday. On Friday, Jan. 2, the Weyburn squad faced the Tempo Stars in Moose Jaw and defeated them 7-1. Playing with a great deal of confidence, the Weyburn squad dominated what appeared to be a tired Moose Jaw team, and had numerous scoring chances. On Sunday, the Canadians hosted Moose Jaw at the Colosseum for their final meeting in the regular league schedule. The contest was a closely played affair with numerous penalties, but Weyburn managed to win 3-1. McCutcheon, assisted by Leippy and Brandee Calder, scored first, followed by a goal by Leippy herself, assisted by Onstad. Moose Jaw pulled within one goal in the last six minutes, but Weyburn secured the win when Vanessa Wick potted an empty-netter 25 seconds before the end. Due to their three wins, the Bantam Canadians are now fourth
in the Regina Bantam Female Hockey League with an 8-5 record,
sitting behind the Regina Tigers, Regina Predators and undefeated
Regina Royals. The Bantam girls Esso Canadians defeated the Saskatoon Comet Thrashers 5-2 to win the championship of the ninth annual Comet Classic tournament in Saskatoon on Dec. 28-30, 2003. In the final game, the Canadians scored three goals in the first period and maintained their lead over the Thrashers for the rest of the game to win 5-2. Leippy notched the hat trick, with Onstad and Jodie Bachart scoring the remaining goals. McCutcheon helped out with two assists, while Steve, O'Watch, Irwin and Calder chipped in with one assist apiece. Earlier in the tournament, the Canadians finished out of the round robin with two wins and a tie. This placed them in second place following the round robin, moving them into the final versus the Comet Thrashers. They defeated the Saskatoon Comet Chics 7-0 in their first game, with O'Watch scoring twice and Thomson, Nault, Kendra Weimer, Leippy and Bachart chipping in the rest. Maegan Biss, Leck, McCutcheon and Leippy all had helpers. Tia Budney recorded the shutout for the Weyburn squad. In the their second game, Leippy scored on an empty net with three seconds remaining to aid the Canadians in their 3-1 victory over the Saskatoon Klodhoppin' Comets. Nault and Calder also added singles, with Carolyn Klemmer, Ali Hilkewich and Andie Watson adding assists. In the final round robin game, the Esso Canadians scored late in the game to earn a 1-1 tie with the Rhein Coyotes. Leippy netted the tying goal, assisted by Weimer and Irwin. The next action for the Canadians is this Jan. 9-11 weekend, when they take part in the Regina Bantam Female Hockey Tournament. |
