An Osage rink won the finals of the 2004 SaskPower Ladies Natural Ice Provincials, which was hosted from Friday to Sunday at the Griffin Curling Club. Marna Allan, Kylee Glover, Debbie LaRose and Tami Gillies defeated Gailene Pasiechnik 11-2 on Sunday afternoon to win the provincial title. The Allan rink was one of five local teams, including four Griffin rinks skipped by Lorna Bossenberry, JoAnn Burley, Audrey Trombley and Margaret Campbell. This was the Osage team's fourth provincial win, having taken the title in 1998, 2000 and 2002, said skip Marna Allan. Despite having several provincial championships under their belts, "it is still exciting (to win)," said Allan. The Allan rink had only one defeat all weekend, and that came in their first game. They were defeated by Jean Taylor of Perdue 9-8 on Friday morning, after the opening ceremonies. "It seems like we always lose that first game, or second game, and end up fighting back," said Allan. Slotted into the B event, the Allan rink doubled their efforts. They defeated the Trombley rink 10-1 on Saturday afternoon, and followed up with 7-2 and 13-4 victories over Diana Durling of Edgeley and Bossenberry of Griffin respectively. On Sunday morning, they won the B side by defeating Darlene Blenkinsop of Hawarden 8-1. That left only the finals, where they met with Pasiechnik. This was the first time the two teams met in the finals, though they have played together at previous provincials. Though Pasiechnik was up 1-0 after the first end, the Allan rink took over the lead and was 4-1 after the third end. They maintained the lead from there on out to take the win. Of the four Griffin rinks, the Bossenberry team, which included Wendy Dammann, Kathy Dammann and Betty Simpson, made it the farthest. Bossenberry defeated Trombley 8-7 on Friday, and followed up with a 10-8 victory over Blenkinsop on Saturday morning. They then lost to Allan 13-4 later that evening, and lost out in the A event final to Pasiechnik 9-3. Fellow Griffin curlers JoAnn Burley, Janelle Campbell, Marilyn Charlton and Ava Dunham lost to Pasiechnik 9-7 on Friday, defeated Taylor and Ardith Lindenback 6-5 and 10-3 respectively on Saturday, and finally lost to Blenkinsop 10-5 that same day. Trombley, Kim Hallberg, Lisa Knoblauch and Brenda Kosior lost 8-7 to Bossenberry, defeated Margaret Campbell 8-2 and lost to Allan 10-1. Margaret Campbell, Pam Gutzke, Kim Reeve and Suzanne Stomp lost 8-5 to Durling and 8-2 to Trombley. Allan commended the local Griffin volunteers for all their hard work behind the scenes putting this event together. "They were so well-organized and so helpful. It just made the whole weekend go so smoothly," she said. |
