The Weyburn Writers Group held their annual meeting on Jan. 8, and elected the following executive for the coming year: president, Anne Lazurko; vice-president, Eileen Besler; secretary and historian, Jean Fahlman; treasurer, Isabelle Eaglesham; phoning, Ilene Yates; and courtesy, Ruth Alexander. In the past year, the Writers Group sponsored a short story workshop with instructor Gillian Harding-Russell of Regina, a poetry workshop with instructor Paul Wilson of Regina, and they held an in-club day-long workshop. The group also held a cafe reading at Picassos, where poetry by the late Ruth Grohn and Millie Whitehead was read as a tribute to these former members. Members also attended various outside events, including presenting library readings, the Festival of Words in Moose Jaw, the spring conference of the Saskatchewan Writers Guild in Regina, the fall conference and annual meeting of the SWG in Regina. One member attended meetings in Regina of the Professional Development Committee, and now serves on the SWG board. In January of 2004, the window in the Weyburn Public Library features local writers' work, as well as a scrapbook and three chapbooks of the Weyburn Writers Group. The meeting time this year has been returned to the second Thursday of the month at 1:30 p.m. in the board room of the Public Library. Evening meetings on Wednesdays were tried, but most members found Thursday afternoon meeting dates more convenient. Anyone interested in attending is welcome to attend. |
