Local boxers Joel Franks and Evan Nyhus will be heading to the Intermediate Canadian Championships this Jan. 29-Feb. 1 weekend. The intermediate nationals, for those 18 years and under, will be held in Shawinigan Falls, Que. Franks hails from Midale and Nyhus is from Ceylon. They are part of a four-man team representing Saskatchewan, and are joined by Curtis Pegg of Saskatoon and Rory Popoff of Moose Jaw. Franks is currently a member of the Soo Line Boxing Club of Weyburn, while Nyhus and Popoff are former members. Nyhus spent his first two years with the Soo Line Club but now boxes with the Regina Lonsdale Club. Popoff, who also boxes with Regina, is originally from Milestone and spent his first two years of boxing with Weyburn. Both Franks and Nyhus are regular contenders at national competitions. Franks won a silver medal at the 2003 Canada Winter Games in New Brunswick, and has also won provincial championships in 1999 and 2002. Nyhus has won four provincial titles and two Junior National Championship bronze medals. |
