Bitterly cold temperature breaks record in January

One record was broken for cold weather during January in Weyburn and another record, for the amount of precipitation that fell in the city, was almost matched.

According to records kept at the city's water filtration plant for Environment Canada, the record low temperature of -38 set in January 28, 1969 was beaten by two degrees this year.

The thermometer dropped to -40 on Jan. 28, before Friday's big blizzard.

The maximum temperature enjoyed during the month was 2 C., on Jan. 13, compared to the average high temperature over the last 10 years of -10.4 in January. The average low temperature over the past 10 years is -20.

The total precipitation that fell on the city last month was 47.8 mm., almost as much as the record high level of precipitation of 48.2 mm that fell in January of 1989. The average precipitation for January over the past 10 years is only 25 mm. The 50-year record low precipitation for the month is 3 mm, set in 1958.

The mean maximum temperature during January 2004 was -13.0, compared to a 50-year running average of -10.1. The mean minimum temperature in January 2004 was -21.6, compared to the 50-year average of -20.2.
