The Weyburn Hurricane Water Polo Club captured several gold and silver medals from the 5-on-5 Water Polo tournament in Winnipeg, Man., over the weekend. The club's Atom team won silver after losing to the Winnipeg Bushido 'A' team in the finals of their division. The Hurricanes could not score on the Bushido goaltender, and the speed of the rival swimmers overwhelmed Weyburn's defence, said coach Alain Lenferna. Prior to the finals, the Hurricanes won their first two games in round-robin action on Friday. They rallied from a 6-4 deficit to defeat the Neptunes 1 team 10-7 on Saturday, but lost their fourth match to the Bushido A team 12-2. They qualified for the finals by defeating the Bushido B team in their fifth match. Playing for Weyburn were Jackson Pegg, Russell Lenferna, Courtney Walkeden, Sydney Huebner, Kaylyn Jensen, Alynn Regier, Marissa Dodge, Brenna Moser, Bailey Oberg and Breanne Walkeden. Pegg and Lenferna also joined Aaron Mahnic on the Regina Bantam Squids. There were two other Winnipeg teams in the bantam division. After defeating both and losing to both teams on Friday and Saturday, the Regina squad won the finals on Sunday for the gold. Weyburn was also represented by a Bantam girls team, joining two Winnipeg squads and another from Estevan. They won silver over Estevan. The Hurricanes lost all three games in the practice round, which didn't count towards the finals. They started out strong in the second round and defeated the Neptunes11-5. The Hurricanes had previously lost to the Neptunes at the Saskatchewan Open in November of 2003. Weyburn lost their next game to the Bushido team 11-4. As Estevan had also lost to both Winnipeg squads, Weyburn played Estevan once more to determine the silver and bronze placings. After a very tense and close game, Weyburn reversed the first round result and defeated Estevan 5-3. Playing for Weyburn were Megan Kalk, Allison Swertz, Claudia Lenferna, Taylor Hoffman, Paige Mahnic, Chantel Johnston, Jane Pegg, Kayla Oberg, Kaylyn Jensen and Jordan Huebner. Pierre Lenferna, Brandon Hoffman and Mahnic also played in the Cadet division with the Regina Squids. This was a triple round robin with two Winnipeg teams, with only the final round counting. The Squids lost only once in the first two rounds, and won both games in the third round to claim gold. Courtney Gerger also played with the Regina Piranha Cadet girls. They placed third after two draws with the Bushido 'B' team and one victory over the Bushido 'C' team. Members of the Hurricanes will be combining with Regina and Estevan players again this March at the Alberta Open. |
