The Weyburn EnCana Wings won the second round of provincial playoffs by thrashing the Notre Dame Hounds 7-0 on Thursday. The Wings won the two-game total-point series 13-1. Bucky Schneider was solid in net, recording his fourth season shutout. Kent Lillejord, Brad Reaney and Justin Richter each had a goal and two assists, while Brendon Vertefeuille and Troy Miller each had a goal and assist each. Orry Knoll and Travis McLeod rounded out the scoring, with assists by Cody Cossar and Clinton Griffiths. Adam Stepp also had a pair of helpers. The Wings are waiting on the outcome of a series between College Mathieu and the Balgonie Prairie Storm to see who their next provincial opponents will be. In league action, the Wings played a home-and-home series with the Melville Millionaires. The Wings had a 4-4 tie with Melville on Friday night. Weyburn had led Melville 2-1 in the first period and 3-2 in the second, but the Millionaires pulled out two goals in the third to tie the game up. James Croft, goaltending for Weyburn, faced 41 shots and made many saves against Melville. Lillejord scored twice, with Vertefeuille and Reed Anderson kicking in the other two goals. On Sunday, the Wings blew away the visiting Millionaires 7-1. Weyburn was up 2-1 in the first, but fired off five unanswered goals in the next two periods. Richter led the team with two goals and two assists, Vertefeuille had three goals, and Knoll had three assists. Lillejord and Reaney rounded out the scoring, with helpers from McLeod and Jason Hoium. The Weyburn EnCana Wings sent six players to the South Saskatchewan Midget Hockey League (SSMHL) All-Star Game in Estevan on Saturday. Hoium, Knoll, Lillejord, McLeod, Reaney and Schneider competed in a skills competition consisting of puck control relays, shooting contests, three-on-goaltender contests and breakaway competitions. Team representation was based on league standings to the end of January. The Wings were able to send the maximum limit of players (six) by way of their first place league standing. Goaltenders were selected based on goals against average, with Bucky Schneider holding the best average at the all-star game. Players on teams who finished in the odd numerical standings were slotted to Team Gold, while players with even numerical standings were on Team Black. Team Black took top honours in the skills competition, but Team Gold won the all-star game 4-3. Reaney was selected Team Gold's player of the game. |
