It is always a pleasure when someone gives you a book or some papers pertaining to Saskatchewan history. Such was the case recently when a gentleman from Estevan, Roy Sanderson, attended the Heritage Day tea at the Soo Line Historical museum tea on Feb. 15. Mr. Sanderson invited me to sit with him and his wife at their tea table. He presented me with a large, hand-drawn map showing Saskatchewan historical areas, trails, etc. He referred to his material as Historic Places Initiative. Although the map covers a large area of Southern Saskatchewan, the trail encompasses Souris Crossing by NWMP in 1886. It also shows the Boundary Commission NWMP Trail 1874 going west and a second Trek of the NWMP 1886, going north past Old Alameda, Old Carlyle, Cannington Manor, Moosomin up to Fort Ellice. Travelling west from Souris Crossing NWMP 1886 the trail referred to as the Boundary Commission NWMP Trail goes as far as Long Creek and Boundary Dam. Mr. Savage has detailed 46 areas, all numbered for easy reference. Of course, he details the Souris Valley Pioneer Museum located in the town of Estevan. Saskatchewan isn't a very old province but when one details all the events and points of interest within the province a lot of historical facts and stories can be seen and heard regarding our own history. It is really a pleasure to find someone who is so vitally interested in our history that they detail the information. Thanks for passing along your information. And thanks to all of you who attended our Heritage Day Tea and the hanging of Sarah Powell Jamali on our Wall of Fame. |
