Anna Semen and Mike Fenwick of the Weyburn Cobras Wrestling Club both won provincial titles on Sunday at the Cadet/Juvenile Provincial Championships at Holy Cross Collegiate in Saskatoon. Semen won gold in her weight class for the cadet female division, while Fenwick won gold in the cadet male division. It's no small feat, considering that Saskatchewan is one of, if not the, toughest provinces for wrestling in Canada, said Cobras coach Kevin Butz. "Winning the wrestling championship in this province is like winning the women's curling title in this province," he said. "For Mike and Anna to both win gold medals, it's outstanding." Jared Wagner and Andy Hodgson were also entered along with Fenwick in the cadet male division. However, Wagner cracked a rib and Hodgson injured his back, so they placed fifth and seventh respectively. In the juvenile division, Kaley Mahaffey won silver in the girls' class and Brian Lunde won silver for the boys' class. Brett Semen was fourth and Atley Roettger placed sixth. While the Cobra cadet and juvenile wrestlers were at provincials, several younger wrestlers were in an event just a day earlier, competing at the Pupsel Tournament at Holy Cross in Saskatoon. For the novice male category, Bryce MacMillon won silver and Justin Chuckry won bronze. In the peewee female category, Courtney Johnson won silver. In the peewee male category, Brett Penny won silver and Jordan Chuckry placed fourth. In the bantam male category, A.J. Semen won silver and Colby Bill placed fourth. This Saturday, March 13, a group of high school-age wrestlers will be competing at the Saskatchewan High School Athletic Association (SHSAA) Sectional Championships in Esterhazy. The winners from the sectionals will move on to SHSAA Provincials in Saskatoon on March 26-27. |
