The Weyburn Legion Army Cadet Corps are joining with their fellow cadets across Canada to celebrate the 125th anniversary of the Army Cadet movement in Canada. At a special parade and ceremony held March 2 at the Weyburn Legion Hall, a commemorative 125th anniversary pin was presented to the top cadet, Cadet Warrant Officer Ashley Perry, and to all the members of the cadet corps. The pins are being provided by the Army Cadet League, which will provide 30,000 of them to all cadets in Canada. Jesse Balkwill, an executive member of the Army Cadet League's Saskatchewan Branch handed the pins out along with commanding officer Capt. Bob Demencuik. The top cadets in the corps will be selected to attend a ceremony on Saturday, April 17, at Government House in Regina, where Lieut.-Gov. Lynda Haverstock will unveil a Canada Post stamp commemorating the 125th anniversary. In conjunction with the ceremony, the cadets from Weyburn and from across Saskatchewan will attend a performance of the Cadet Honour Band and a MuchMusic dance in Regina. Also at the March 2 parade, civilian instructor David Katschke was attested by Capt. Demencuik as a member of the Canadian Armed Forces. Up until then, Katschke has been working with the Weyburn corps as a civilian volunteer and instructor, but in the fall he applied to become a member of the Armed Forces' Cadet Instructors Cadre (CIC). The assembled cadets were informed that Katschke was found to meet the standards for an officer candidate. He will now join as an officer cadet and will begin training to become a CIC officer. He will be taking basic officer training and a military occupation course for CIC officers. This training, in combination with at least one to three years' of service, must be completed before he will be commissioned as a Second Lieutenant. Fellow civilian instructor Kim Hallberg has also applied to become a member of the CIC officers, and her papers are expected to come through shortly. |
