Red Wings' forward Jereme Tendler remembers all too well how Weyburn fared last year against Yorkton in the playoffs. Weyburn had been up 3-1 over Yorkton in the first round of SJHL playoffs, when the Terriers staged a massive comeback and won the final three games. "I couldn't believe it, that they came back from 3-1," said Tendler. Some people might have believed that was going to happen this year as well, when Yorkton managed to stave off defeat with victories in Games 4 and 5. Some people were wrong. The Weyburn Red Wings squashed the Terriers' comeback on Monday night in Yorkton, scoring a 2-1 victory in overtime to win the Sherwood Conference championship by a 4-2 series total. "Everyone's so happy. It's such a good feeling beating them out, because of what they did to us last year," said Tendler. At 16:28 in overtime, Frankie Dicks came up with the game-winning goal on assists by Cody Wasik and Jarod Eagles. Whether that goal was necessary was a matter of hot debate, however. Tendler, who has been playing with a cast since being slashed by Notre Dame Hound Rylan Kaip, scored a goal at 1:08 of the third period, putting the Wings up 1-0 over the Terriers after two scoreless periods. Cody Wasik and Dicks assisted. But Yorkton stayed in the game after a highly debatable goal at 12:52. Apparently, the puck had struck the crossbar of Weyburn's net, rolled off goaltender Cale Jordison's back, and hit the side of his pad. Though the referee initially ruled it out, consultation with the two linesmen and goal judge gave Yorkton their first goal of the game. In total, Jordison stopped 31 shots for the win, while Weyburn fired 34 shots at Yorkton goalie Kevin Dziaduck. It was a big shift in effort from the Wings, who had lost 3-2 the night before at the Weyburn Colosseum. The Terriers had also won Friday's game in Yorkton by a 2-1 margin. "I don't know. We've been playing well on the road all year, and everyone just wanted to win," said Tendler. "Everyone just kept skating, crashing the net, (making) lots of shots, shooting from every angle." Sunday's game was marked by a lacklustre effort by the Red Wings, who were trailing 2-0 after the first two periods. Weyburn outshot the Terriers with 28 shots to Yorkton's 19, but had trouble working their scoring opportunities, partly due to superior play from Dziaduck. Rick Wood finally put Weyburn on the scoreboard with a goal at 0:48 of the third, assisted by Clayton Bastura. But Yorkton responded with a goal at 12:20, bringing the score to 3-1. Weyburn's Ryan Kuntz had another goal at 18:55, assisted by Matt Wheeler and Ryan Grona. Despite pulling Jordison out of the net for an extra man, however, the Red Wings couldn't manage another goal and lost 3-2. On Friday, Wheeler scored Weyburn's only goal at 15:34 of the first period, assisted by Roan Blampin and Kuntz. But Justin Keller tied the game three minutes later on a power play, and Jason Beatty scored the game-winner at 18:43 of the third. Jordison stopped 20 shots on goal for Weyburn, while Dziaduck blocked 26 shots from Weyburn. Last Wednesday, the Wings gained a 3-0 series lead over Yorkton with a 3-2 double overtime victory in Weyburn. Kenny King, Mills and Tendler all scored regular time goals for Weyburn, while Kuntz scored the game-winner on assists by Pearce and King. Overall, it's been a rough series for the Red Wings and Terriers, with every game except for Game 1 being decided by just one goal. Though Weyburn welcomed back Jarod Eagles and Tendler from the injury list, they lost key defenceman Greg Park. Park suffered severe facial injuries, requiring stitches and possible surgery, after a check from behind by Barry Sparvier on March 22. Park had to be carried off the ice on a stretcher and taken to hospital. In turn, Sparvier was suspended by the SJHL and did not play again for Yorkton for the remainder of the series. Dean Katzberg of the Terriers was also suspended two games after charging Jordison on March 20. Weyburn will now face either Kindersley or Humboldt for the SJHL title in the MemberCare Cup final. Kindersley was leading Humboldt 3-2 as of Tuesday, March 30. The two teams played Game 5 last night, however, which means the series could be concluded if Kindersley won. Results from that match are not available due to publication deadlines. However, if the Broncos won, Game 7 of the Kindersley-Humboldt series will be held Thursday, April 1. |
