WIT Wings down Bruins for league championship

The Weyburn Inland Terminal Atom AA Wings won the South Saskatchewan Atom League championship on Thursday, downing the Estevan Upton Bruins 7-1 in Game 3 of their playoff series.

Nathan Ferris had a huge game in goal for Weyburn, as he stopped numerous scoring chances by Estevan in the first two periods. Ben Johnstone scored Estevan's only goal.

Brent Benson led the Wings with four goals and two assists. Eric Evans, Kelton Hoium and Derrick Pouliot added the three remaining goals.

Tyler Mryglod, John Cugnet, Garett Walbaum, Evans and Pouliot also contributed assists.

The Wings and Bruins had been tied 1-1 in the best-of-three playoff series prior to Thursday.

On Tuesday, March 23, the Wings had defeated the Bruins 7-6 in Estevan.

Hoium led the Wings in scoring with a hat trick. Carter Struthers added two goals, while Benson and Cugnet had one goal each.

Benson, Walbaum, Brayden Leslie and Cugnet each assisted on two goals, while Struthers, Reid Jackson and Cody Miller had single assists.

Ferris goaltended for Weyburn. Scoring for Estevan were Johnstone and Tanner Froese with goals each, while Marshall Holzer and Austin Daae contributed singles.

The WIT Wings lost Game 1 of the series 6-4 on March 18.
