The City of Weyburn was generally pleased with last week's provincial budget, tabled in the Saskatchewan Legislature. For the city, the budget delivered the $10 million in revenue sharing as promised, of which $7.4 million is designated for urban municipalities, and $5.35 million will be put into the pool for cities. How much of that will be coming to Weyburn has not been finally decided yet, said city manager Bob Smith, but he's guessing it will be close to last year's amount of $62,000. The city mayors and managers will be holding more discussions in the next couple of weeks to decide how to divide the money up. "We were quite happy as far as revenue-sharing goes. Last year we got $4.8 million out of the $10 million, and this year it's $7.4 million," said Mayor Don Schlosser, also president of the Saskatchewan Urban Municipalities Association (SUMA). Asked if he agrees with the contention of the Saskatchewan Association of Rural Municipalities (SARM) that RMs were short-changed by the dividing up of the funds, Schlosser replied, "They're saying that, but they got a substantial amount of money over the last two years that we didn't get. The one thing SARM and SUMA both agree to is we all need more money." He noted urban municipalities have to take care of facilities for the benefit of both urban and rural residents. The city will have to pay more with the provincial sales tax increase, but Schlosser noted the city will do well with the GST exemption from the federal government. The loss of jobs is also a concern, as it will impact all of the communities the job loss takes place in, said the mayor. |
