Weyburn Junior High students and parents are planning a number of activities to raise close to $61,000 for a trip by the honour band to the Musicfest Canada in Montreal. The parents have already been out talking to potential sponsors in Weyburn. Parents representative Dianne Horner said that students had planned a car wash for Saturday, May 8, at the Canadian Tire parking lot from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mother's Day on Sunday, May 9, is going to be a big fund-raising day with concerts, desserts, pies, drinks and a silent auction, to be held at the WJH. "We want especially mothers and grandmothers to come out on this day and support the event. Entry fee will be $3 while a pie and drink will cost $2," she said. Horner said that they have received funding pledges from various organizations. "The Weyburn Co-op is donating $800, Miles Agency $500, B&D Meats $1,000, Lions Club $400," she said, adding that other organizations that have pledged to help are the Rotary Club, Young Fellows, and Anadarko Corporation among others. The school will be sending 54 students and about 16 chaperones to the festival that will be held from May 25 to 29 in Montreal. They will also be visiting Ottawa where they will be given a tour of the Parliament Hill and perform on Victoria Day. Several items have been donated for a raffle to be held just before the students depart. The Dodge family has donated a two-night stay at Kananaskis. The Irwin family has donated a Nintendo game cube, the Southeast Regional College has donated a fleece sweater while EnCana has donated a duffel bag and a stainless steel barbecue set. The raffle tickets will be one for $2 and three for $5. For tickets contact Sharon Ivan or Sara Irwin. A pizza drive has been planned, with four types of pizzas being offered. They are ham and pineapple, pepperoni and mushroom and cheese. All three are going for $10. A loaded pizza with all the above ingredients will go for $12. Contact Donna Skjerdal and Cheryl Lefflar to order. SARCAN has also set up an account for the WJH. Those who have bottles can donate it to the school trip through the account set up at the bottle depot. Those interested in donating through the bank can contact Gail Silljer at the Bank of Montreal. |
