A total of six concerts have been scheduled for the 2004-2005 season of the Weyburn Concert Series. First up will be the Polyjesters, set to perform on Monday, Oct. 25. The Polyjesters (who boast a ukelele as their lead instrument) play any type of music, from swing to bluegrass, western to jazz. On Tuesday, Nov. 16, the Peters Drury Trio with Rick Kilburn will be performing. The Trio hails from Whitehorse, Yukon, and has a repertoire of original songs, arrangements of jazz standards and historical jazz with fresh influences. There will be two concerts in February of 2005. Carlene Friesen will be the first on Thursday, Feb. 10. Friesen is an old-time fiddle champ, a music and dance instructor, composer, dancer actor and yodeler. The second concert in February is The Chess Club on Monday, Feb. 28. The "club" features two well-known Prairie musicians, guitarist Jack Semple of Regina and Greg Lowe of Winnipeg, Man. The Piano Men, featuring Jim Witter, will perform on Tuesday, March 22, 2005. The Piano Men is a musical celebration of the 70s, performing the music of Billy Joel and Elton John. A rear-projected screen and visual presentation is core to the show, presenting the audience news headlines, events, commercials and other images that typify the era. Finally, the Nathaniel Dett Chorale will perform on Wednesday, April 6, 2005. The group, formed in 1998 and directed by Brainerd Blyden-Taylor, is Canada's first professional choral group dedicated to performing Afrocentric music of all styles, including classical, spiritual, gospel, jazz, folk and blues. It is named for Nathaniel Dett, an African-Canadian composer who was a prominent figure among black musicians in Canada in the early 20th century. All concerts will be held at the Weyburn Comprehensive School Cafetorium, beginning at 7:30 p.m. Earlybird prices for season tickets are in effect until Sunday, May 30. Adult tickets are $68, senior tickets are $63, child and student tickets are $38, family tickets are $162 and couple tickets are $116. After May 30, season tickets are $83 for adults, $74 for seniors and $212 for families. There are no prices set for students and couples.
