All 170 members of six music groups from the Weyburn Comprehensive School, along with 14 chaperones and two music directors, returned to Weyburn on Sunday after a five-day trip to Slayton, Minn., and Minneapolis. The groups performed in Slayton at the high school where former Comp music director Lyle Johnson now teaches. The choirs and jazz band performed at the Mall of the Americas, and all six groups competed at the Performing Arts Consultants' Music Festival. The Jazz Band received a gold rating (or a mark over 90), the concert band and three choirs received a silver rating (between 80 and 90) and the Grade 10 choir received a bronze. The bands were directed by Larry Balog, and the choirs were led by Colleen Weimer. Everyone on the trip reported enjoying the dinner theatre presentation of "Cats", attending a low-scoring game between Minnesota Twins and the Seattle Mariners, the meal at Bubba Shrimps restaurant and the day spent at the Valleyfair Amusement Park. The Comp School will host the 31st annual Provincial Cosmetology Competition today, May 19, in the school's cosmetology lab. The competition will run from 3:30 to 8 p.m., and is open to the public. Representatives will be at Southeast Regional College on Thursday, May 20, to present material on "Surviving US." This is an opportunity for graduating students to get more information about how they can survive their first year away at a post-secondary institution. It will be held in Room 114 starting at 7 p.m. The musical Grease is a week away and strong ticket sales show there will be large crowds for each performance. The district track meet will be held in Weyburn on Wednesday, May 26, on the new, all-weather Summer Games track. |
