270 entries expected for Weyburn motocross races

The Weyburn and District Motocross Association will host its annual motocross races out at Moffat Pits this Sunday, May 30.

John Rouse, president of the association, said members are expecting roughly 270 entries at the races, which will include about 20 riders from the Weyburn-Estevan area.

The Weyburn Motocross Association is only one of the groups that have a stake this year in the motocross races, as several other groups use the event as a fund-raiser.

The Weyburn Boy Scouts run a canteen out at Moffat Pits during the motocross races.

As well, the Weyburn Firefighters Association, with some help from the Weyburn Devils senior hockey team, have done the flagging at the races for a number of years.

The firefighters use their share of the proceeds for their general charity fund.

This race is the fourth round in the provincial motocross series, said Rouse. The series continues throughout the summer around the province.

Spectators may watch the action from bleachers located atop the hill overlooking the whole track. The Weyburn Agricultural Society provides bleachers for the event.

Admission is $5 a head for a wristband, which allows spectators to come and go as they please.

"This is as close as you'll ever get to extreme sports in our area," said Rouse.

Racing starts at about 10 a.m. Sunday morning and goes until about 5 p.m.

Moffat Pits is located by the Weyburn Golf Club, with the entrance being a short distance up the road from the golf course entrance.
