Legion Cadet Corps holds review, receives awards

Twenty-three members of the 2302 Weyburn Legion Cadet Corps attended the annual review ceremony May 18 at the Legion Hall.

It was the 56th year of the Corps in the city, making it one of the older ones in the province, according to commanding officer Captain Bob Demencuik.

Members of the corps demonstrated projects and skills they learned during the year and accepted their rewards and awards.

One cadet, Cadet Warrant Officer Ashley Perry, met the requirements to be certified as Master Cadet. She has gone through a minimum of five years of training and worked at cadet summer camp, said Demencuik. Perry will attend the Whitehorse Cadet Summer Training Centre as a member of the training staff.

Perry's brother Tristan received his six-year service award. Private Colby Bill, Cpl. Candace Trenouth, and master corporal Anthony Thompson all received the Captain Wm. Layh shield for best attendance. Thompson also received the Royal Canadian Legion President's Trophy for best all-round cadet while private Tayla Gabriel received the award for best first-year cadet and master corporal Brittany St. Jules received the award for the most improved cadet.

Sgt. Cassy Schuette received the Rick Murray Memorial trophy for Marksmanship, while Bill also received an award for the best dressed cadet on parade.

On behalf of the Corps, Demencuik accepted a plaque of the 125th anniversary stamp issued by Canada Post on April 17 of this year.

The Royal Canadian Legion also accepts a sponsor charter for sponsoring the corps for the past 56 years.

The reviewing officer for the evening was Brigadier General (Retired) Cliff Walker, CD, chief executive officer of the South Saskatchewan Division of the Corps of Commissionaires.
