With money still coming in, the total collection as of Friday for the Red Shield Appeal is $6,000, says Capt. Raelene Russell of the Salvation Army. Canvassers collected money throughout Weyburn for two weeks, with Wednesday being the final day for canvassing. The $6,000 is short of the Salvation Army's goal of $22,000. But the amount does not include any money mailed in to the Salvation Army in Regina. Russell said that canvassers leave mail-in envelopes in mailboxes when there isn't anyone at home, and those envelopes are coded to indicate they're from Weyburn. The money from mail-in envelopes are counted in the Red Shield Appeal total, and will return to Weyburn in the coming months. In fact, said Russell, they collect money for the Red Shield all year, so "I have great confidence we'll meet our objective by year's end." Funds raised through the Red Shield Appeal go to local programming done by the Salvation Army, as well as provincial projects like shelters in Regina. |
