The Saskatchewan Wheatland 1993 AAA Stars, which includes several local hockey players and coaches, won the silver medal at the Winnipeg Champions Cup last week. The Champions Cup was held in Winnipeg, Man., from Thursday to Sunday. This tournament featured the top North American AAA hockey teams. On Thursday, the Stars tied the Minnesota Icemen 5-5 in the morning game and later defeated the Minnesota Blades 6-2 in the afternoon. On Friday, the AAA Stars defeated the Boston Icemen 3-1 and then crushed the Connecticut Yankees 7-1. This left them in first place out of the round-robin portion of the tournament, with a 3-0-1 record. The Stars received a bye into the A side semi-final, where they faced their northern Saskatchewan rival, the Hustlin' Huskies. The Stars won the game 3-2, propelling them into the final. There, they lost out to the Detroit Little Caesars 5-4, receiving the silver medal. They also won the Best Defensive Award for allowing the fewest goals of any team in the tournament. Other teams in the Champions Cup were the Foothills Elite from Calgary, Alta., the host Manitoba Moose and the Vancouver, B.C., Vipers. The next action for the Wheatland Stars is the Regina Conexus AAA Super Series in Regina from June 11-13. The Wheatland Stars are an atom major all-star team of players from around southern Saskatchewan. The roster includes goalie coach Dave Ferris and Nathan Ferris of Milestone; Reid Jackson of Minton; Brent Benson, head coach Murray Benson, Cody Miller and John Cugnet of Weyburn. |
