Judging for the 2004 Golden Garbage Can contest will be held on Wednesday, June 9. This year's contest is no longer a competition with Estevan, who dropped out of the Golden Garbage Can altogether, but an internal competition. Three judges will be inspecting five zones within the city of Weyburn. Zone 1 covers South Hill. Zone 2 covers the blocks surrounding the downtown, excluding the downtown itself. Zone 3 covers the north side of Weyburn, cut off from the other zones by Highway No. 13 and 16th Street. Zone 5 is the eastern portion of Weyburn, separated from the other zones by 16th Street. Zone 4 is sandwiched between Zone 2 and Zone 5. A map of the different zones has already appeared on the City of Weyburn information page, appearing in the Weyburn Review. When the "cleanest area" is selected, a few residents of that zone will be selected at random to receive prizes, which might include cash and items donated by businesses. The Chamber of Commerce business judging competition was originally set for Monday, but was put off because of the rain. President Ian Carleton said they will likely do the judging on Friday, June 4. The Weyburn Minor Ball Association held their annual clean-up all week long last week, with Saturday being the last day. Winners of the Golden Garbage Can poster contest are as follows: for Grades 1-2, Ashlee Sandiford of APES placed first and Brooklyn Arts of St. Dominic Savio was in second place. For Grades 3-4, Samara Alexander of Souris placed first and Colleen Cretin of St. Dominic placed second. For Grades 5-6, Alannah Penny of Haig placed first and Shalisa Georghiades of Souris placed second. |
